Surrender to the System

Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan

A few years back I read a profile about day traders. Among the various tidbits on their lifestyle, stress, and work habits was this tidbit:

Most day traders who made money and then lost money – did so because they moved away from their original system.  Most of the day traders they interviewed veered from the trades outlined by their systems because they got greedy or they became emotionally involved in the stock itself.

That is an interesting notion – had they stayed the course success would have been much more likely (though still not guaranteed).

I think this translates well to most things.

Have you ever wanted to do any of the following?

Lose weight, get stronger, get more organized, make more money, make more friends, learn a different language, become smarter, etc.

Of course you have! Even though we’re individuals – we all want most of the same things in life!

There are a lot of “systems” out there for achieving those goals.

Here are just a few systems I found with just a quick search:

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of plans out there to lose weight and make money, etc.  So why are there still a lot of people out there who are overweight and barely making a living?

It is because we deviate from the plan.

There are a lot of reasons for this. Maybe we don’t fully trust the system. Maybe we’re trying to improve on the system before we’ve followed through or we’re trying to take short-cuts. Perhaps we lack the motivation, the focus, or the drive to do what needs to be done. Maybe we just got side-tracked by life’s many interruptions.

I know this has happened to me. And I’m sure it has happened to you.

Maybe you found (or even bought) a great system to do whatever it is you wanted to do. Right away you were hopeful, motivated, and excited to get started. But then, before too long you found a few reasons to abandon the system before you saw the results you wanted.

The problem isn’t the goal or the system. It is our ability to follow through. The problem is you and me.

But what would happen if we picked just one goal – and one plan – and we followed it to the letter?  What would the outcome be? Would it be worth the short term sacrifice to get the desired outcome?

Wouldn’t it be fun to find out?

Surrender to the system and see what unfolds.

Pick a goal. Pick a system. Follow it. See What Happens!
